Exclusive: Danny Mills suggests talks may have taken place over new Leeds contract deal
Danny Mills has suggested that behind-the-scenes talks have taken place at Leeds United over a new deal for defender Gaetano Berardi.
The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the Swiss international has been a great servant for the club and will be looked after accordingly by the Whites.
Berardi is out of contract at the end of the season and has become a fringe player for Marcelo Bielsa, his appearance against Arsenal just his 12th start of the season.
With Leeds pushing for promotion to the Premier League, Mills says the 31-year-old may be biding his time as it could determine the sort of deal he gets should he be offered one.
“I think he’ll be quite happy to stay, he’s been here for quite a while now so he’s pretty settled with family, friends and everything else around the Leeds area,” Mills told Football Insider.
“He’s in no rush and I think Leeds have the ability where they can sit and wait a little bit, let’s just see if we get promoted, and from his point of view he might be thinking: ‘Hang on, if we get promoted, it’s a different type of contract I might get.’

“He’s shown loyalty to the football club already, I’m sure that would be reciprocated in one way, shape or form. There might have been talks behind the scenes already, just because he’s out of contract.
“He’s been a very, very good servant to the club and I’m sure in one way, shape for he will be looked after.”
Berardi has played 148 times for Leeds in his five-and-a-half-year spell at Elland Road, featuring in numerous positions across the back four.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has urged one player to leave Elland Road for the good of his career this month.
