Exclusive: Mohamed Salah reaches ‘agreement in principle’ over Liverpool extension

Mohamed Salah has “agreed in principle” to a new two-year Liverpool contract, sources have told Football Insider.

However, the player and club have not yet struck a full agreement over the package due to a hold-up around the 32-year-old’s image rights.

That disagreement is now the main obstacle to Salah signing a new multi-year deal at Anfield.

The forward’s public stance that a deal is “not close” – as conveyed following the win over West Ham on Sunday (29 December) – is believed to be part of a strategy with his advisers to put public pressure on the club.

Nevertheless, there is a growing sense that a full agreement will be reached in what would be a huge boost for Liverpool fans.

Salah has been in sensational form for the Reds this term, who are in control of the Premier League title race at the halfway point of the 2024-25 campaign.

Salah set to sign two-year Liverpool extension

The Egypt international is currently out of contract at the end of the season and can agree a pre-contract with foreign sides from Wednesday (1 January).

Saudi Pro League clubs have long held an interest in the Liverpool legend, while Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have also been linked with a potential swoop.

Salah has hit 20 goals and 17 assists in 26 games across all competitions so far this term and looks set to record his best-ever season.

The forward has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and more during his time with Liverpool and looks well-placed to add to that haul under Arne Slot this term.

Liverpool and Salah are next in action against Man United on Sunday (5 January).
