Exclusive: Neco Williams tipped to leave Liverpool by Golden Boot winner

Kevin Phillips fears Neco Williams may have to leave Liverpool with Trent Alexander-Arnold preparing to dominate the right-back position for years to come.

The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested Alexander-Arnold’s age – he is still only 21 – and love for the club will limit the first-team chances of his younger teammate.

Williams, 19, has shown immense promise this season in his five first-team appearances, having already contributed three assists from right-back.

However, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, 21, for competition at Anfield, it is difficult to see how the Welsh teenager would establish himself in the first-team.

The England international has already spoken of his ambitions to become the Reds captain and it would appear any first-team aspirations for Williams would have to be realised by displacing a full-back widely recognised as one of the best on the planet.

When asked by Football Insider if it was a case of right place, wrong time for the young defender, ex-Premier League Golden Boot winner Phillips said: “Trent-Alexander is never injured.

“He plays nearly every game and he will not want to be rested and rightly so. When you are playing in a side that is winning every week you want to play every game.

“Unfortunately for the young lad, I am not so sure he will be allowed to leave on loan because if anything was to happen to Arnie they would not want to leave themselves short.

“Trent loves Liverpool and he has already said he wants to be captain so that position is going to be dominated for a long time.

“It is great that Neco is at a huge football club and playing understudy to one of the best full-backs but at one stage you want to play football.”

Alexander-Arnold put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield in January 2019 that ties him down to the club until 2024.

The right-back is one of a number of Jurgen Klopp’s side tipped to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year with 2 goals and 12 assists in 29 appearances this campaign.
