Exclusive: Reaction to Newcastle reported move to sign player Ancelotti values at £131m

Noel Whelan insisted Newcastle United would be pulling off a coup if they completed a deal for Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 28-year-old’s signing would be a show of “real intent” by the prospective new owners.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Newcastle have made contact with Napoli about a deal for the centre-half if the PCP Partners takeover is completed.

The Toon eagerly await the Premier League to ratify the £300million takeover which would bring an initial £200million investment into the club, Football Insider understands.

Koulibaly has been continually linked with a move to the Premier League and Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has claimed he is worth £131m.

When asked by Football Insider if the Senegal international is the type of player that should be targeted post-takeover, Whelan said: “The fans would be overjoyed with that.

“A player that some of the top six have been wanting. If they can compete and get that it would be a fantastic signing.

“It would show real intent to the start of this new era for Newcastle. They are the sort of players that the club will be looking to buy.

“He seems professional and he has got that drive – he wants to succeed. He is tenacious, quick and aggressive centre-half that commands the area.

“It was not long ago that Manchester United were looking at him. If they can get that over the line it would be a great start.”

It would more than likely require a healthy transfer fee to lure the centre-half from Napoli given he still has three years left on his contract.

Koulibaly has made 21 appearances for the Serie A giants in what has been a tumultuous season at the San Paolo Stadium.
