Exclusive: Newcastle make shock Sandro Tonali transfer decision

Newcastle United could reluctantly consider offers for midfielder Sandro Tonali next summer with a shock transfer on the cards, sources have told Football Insider.

It has been widely reported that the 24-year-old is unhappy at St James’ Park, sparking speculation about a potential return to Italy.

Tonali is attracting interest from Turin giants Juventus and it is believed a big offer would be carefully considered by Newcastle.

However, sources say the Italy international will not leave Tyneside in the January transfer window – which opens next week.

Newcastle remain unable to spend to their full potential under the Saudi-backed ownership due to the pressure of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Tonali could be sacrificed next summer if an Italian club comes forward with a suitable offer.

The midfielder has been restricted to just eight starts in 18 total appearances for Newcastle so far in the 2024-25 campaign.

He has played the full 90 minutes in the last three fixtures against Leicester, Brentford and Ipswich – playing a key role in three consecutive victories.

Newcastle paid a reported £55million to bring the 21-cap star to Tyneside from AC Milan last summer (2023) but he was hit with a 10-month ban for gambling rule breaches last October.

As a result, he has played just 30 times for the Magpies – contributing three goals and two assists.

His contract at St James’ Park runs until June 2028.

In other news, 32-year-old “will leave Magpies” as termination decision made.
