Exclusive: Newcastle ready ‘concrete’ James Trafford move as Nick Pope decision made
Newcastle United are readying a “concrete” move to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, sources have told Football Insider.
The Magpies are in the market for a new number one shot-stopper despite Nick Pope’s impressive return from an extended injury absence.
Trafford, just 22, is a top target for the League Cup winners and has also been linked with other Premier League clubs – including Graham Potter’s West Ham.
Newcastle regard the Burnley goalkeeper as a “huge” talent capable of being the long-term number one at St James’ Park, sources say.
Trafford could replace Pope as Newcastle number one
Pope has fought Martin Dubravka for the starting berth under Eddie Howe this season but got the nod for the all-important Wembley final win over Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Trafford has cultivated an unbelievable defensive record with Scott Parker’s Burnley side in the Championship.
Appearances (Starts) | 37 (32) |

He has made 40 second-tier appearances this term, conceding just 12 goals and keeping 28 clean sheets.
Trafford joined the Clarets from Man City in 2023 and is under contract at Turf Moor until June 2027.
He has been called up to the last two senior England squads but is yet to make his debut for the Three Lions.

Newcastle plot free transfer swoop for Calvert-Lewin
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Thursday (10 April) that Newcastle are “very keen” on signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer this summer.
The 28-year-old is one of the Magpies’ top two targets to replace Callum Wilson, who will leave St James’ Park when his contract ends in June.
Calvert-Lewin, who has been with Everton since 2016, since has rejected multiple extension offers and is set to leave for free.
