Exclusive: Newcastle set sights on James Garner after new contract twist
Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Everton midfielder James Garner ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The 24-year-old’s outstanding performances this season have seen David Moyes back him for a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
Newcastle scouts have been making regular checks on Garner, whose contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium expires next summer.
Everton are keen to keep hold of the former Manchester United youngster though and are expected to offer him a new deal.
They do not want to lose him either on a free next summer or for a cut-price fee in January.

James Garner on Newcastle’s midfielder shortlist
It has been a difficult start to the season for Newcastle, with the Tyneside outfit sitting a lowly 14th in the Premier League table.
As a result, the Magpies are eager to reinforce their midfield ranks in the January transfer window.
Along with Garner, Football Insider revealed on 12 October that Newcastle are interested in re-signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
Out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has also been linked with a move to St James’ Park, although Ruben Amorim’s side are reluctant to let the 20-year-old depart in January.
Newcastle in race for exciting forward
Meanwhile, Newcastle are plotting a move to sign Angers’ teenage sensation Sidiki Cherif and are racing the likes of Sunderland and Fulham for his signature, sources have told Football Insider.

Cherif, 18, has established himself as one of the most exciting young attackers in Ligue 1 after catching the eye for Angers, and is valued at around £22million.
The skilful forward has scored three goals in his last five games, including against Ligue 1 giants Monaco and Marseille, leading to speculation about his future.
Cherif’s performances have brought him onto the radar of a number of top sides across Europe, with the Premier League trio now keeping tabs on his progress.
