Exclusive: Bent believes 'Top clubs' may be keen on Newcastle player amid reported speculation
Darren Bent suggested a lot of top clubs may be keen on Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff due to his contract situation.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the retired striker admitted that top clubs will believe they can make a profit on Longstaff if the Magpies don’t sort out a new deal for him.
It has been reported that with Longstaff’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Magpies will be entitled to just £400,000 in compensation if someone signs him when his deal expires in the summer.
Bent shared that he thought Longstaff had done really well and confidently predicted the Magpies to get a deal done for him, though admitted it may take some time.
When asked if Newcastle will be scrambling to sort Longstaff out a new deal, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, you’d like to think they’ll get it done.
“He’s from up there and players from there, to tend to stay up there, especially the young kids as they like to learn their football education up there.

“He has done really well and for £400,000, a lot of top clubs will be thinking we can turn that into a profit.
“But I’ll think he’ll stay at Newcastle, they’ll eventually get the deal done but it may just take a little bit of time.”
Longstaff has featured four times in the Premier League so far this season and has scored in both of his outings against Manchester United.
The 19-year-old midfielder has captured headlines as a result and ended up winning his first caps for England’s U-20s this season due to his performances.
