Exclusive: Newcastle well placed to agree deals as PSR update emerges

Newcastle United have significant profit and sustainability (PSR) capacity to sign players in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Newcastle have been close to breaching the PSR rules in recent years, with Premier League clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Eddie Howe’s side spent close to £250m in the summer transfer window, having signed Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw on permanent deals, while Aaron Ramsdale joined on loan.

However, Wissa is yet to make his Newcastle debut after being sidelined through injury, raising questions around whether the club will look to strengthen again in January.

Sources have told Football Insider Newcastle have plenty of PSR capacity to improve their squad in the mid-season window and don’t need to fear breaching the spending rules.

Newcastle get PSR boost after Alexander Isak transfer

Newcastle avoided a PSR breach for 2023-24 after selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton in the summer of 2024.

The situation was more comfortable in the latest window, with the north-east giants less restrained by their finances compared to last year.

Newcastle’s PSR situation received a further boost after their £72m loss for 2022-23 dropped out of their three-year calculations from 1 July onwards.

Meanwhile, Alexander Isak completed his £125m move to Liverpool before the transfer window closed on 1 September.

Sources say the Isak deal strengthened Newcastle’s PSR position considerably and will allow them to sign players in January.

The Sweden international has so far struggled to make an impact for Liverpool, having registered just one goal in eight appearances.

Newcastle consider transfer plans after latest developments

Newcastle are considering their plans for the January window following their mixed start to the new season.

Howe’s side currently sit 12th in the Premier League table, but they have won two of their past three league fixtures.

The Tynesiders also beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (29 October) to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, with Fabian Schar and Woltemade grabbing the goals.
