Exclusive: Oxford United eye Liam Manning reunion after Gary Rowett sack
Oxford United are considering a move for former manager Liam Manning to replace Gary Rowett following his sacking, sources have told Football Insider.
The U’s parted ways with Rowett after winning just four of their 22 league matches, leaving them 22nd in the Championship table, two points from safety.
Michael Beale is believed to be a contender for the role at the Kassam Stadium, but a shock return for Manning could now be on the cards following his exit in November 2023.
The 40-year-old has since had spells with Bristol City and Norwich City, where Philippe Clement is now in charge. Now, however, he is a free agent and could be set for an emotional reunion.
Multiple names emerge for vacant Oxford United job
Manning appears to be a favourite for the Oxford job, with Beale a slightly less likely name, but it remains to be seen how the former manager feels about a return to the Kassam.
He spent nearly two years at Ashton Gate before making the switch to the Canaries. After just 17 matches and an 18 per cent win rate, though, that spell quickly came to an end.

During his short stint with the U’s back in 2023, Manning won 48 per cent of his matches, even winning a Manager of the Month award before leaving to join the Robins halfway through the season.
What Liam Manning has said about his previous exit
Unsurprisingly, Manning has already spoken about his departure from the Kassam Stadium, suggesting that “if United fans hate me,” he will take it as a compliment due to how far the club reached.
He also added that there are “some terrific people at Oxford United,” highlighting that there might still be some figures at the ground wanting him to return [Sky Sports].
Desperate times call for desperate measures, but with the U’s still in the Championship dropzone, it is imperative that the hierarchy make the right call in the dugout to avoid relegation.
The team has won just one of its last 10 league games, coming in a surprise 2-1 win over Ipswich Town, and that form needs to improve drastically.
