Exclusive: Phil Parkinson jets out as Wrexham push to sign Sidiki Cherif

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was in France yesterday to cast an eye over transfer target Sidiki Cherif, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources say Parkinson was using the game to assess the French market as he eyes improvements for his Wrexham side both this month and for the future.

Angers drew 0-0 with Paris FC in front of the watching Wrexham manager, who will have been nervous as Cherif was withdrawn following a blow to his ankle.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 22 January that Wrexham have made a move for Cherif and have lodged a record-breaking bid worth £19million to Angers.

The 19-year-old has scored four goals in 19 Ligue 1 games so far this season, and has a contract at Angers until 2029, but could be available for the right price.

Phil Parkinson jets out to track Sidiki Cherif for Wrexham

Wrexham have set their sights on Cherif as they feel he will be a long-term option whose value could rocket despite what is a huge bid for his services.

The Championship side are hopeful of bolstering their squad to mount a push for the playoff places in the second half of the season after rising into sixth.

Just four points separate Wrexham from QPR in 12th place, but they are keen to put distance between themselves and the chasing pack with some major additions.

Parkinson jetted out to cast his eye over their potential signing as well as any other opportunities, with more than just the striker on his radar.

However, their chances may have been dented should Cherif’s injury prove serious.

Crystal Palace join Wrexham in race to sign Cherif

Wrexham are not the only English club keeping a close eye on Cherif’s progress in France, with Crystal Palace also believed to be strong suitors.

Football Insider revealed on 25 January that Crystal Palace have held talks over Cherif but have so far been frustrated by Angers’ lofty demands.

The Eagles have been in talks over signing the 19-year-old for weeks now, but are no closer to an agreement, and remain hopeful his price will drop later in the window.

Crystal Palace have identified him as a long-term replacement for Jean-Philippe Mateta and had been keen to get ahead of their rivals to do a deal this month.

However, the presence of a number of intermediaries introduced into the deal has further complicated the situation and led to growing frustrations on Palace’s end.
