Kevin Phillips “fully expects” Patrick Bamford to lead the line for Leeds United against Fulham on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former European golden shoe winner believes Bamford will be “full of confidence” after scoring in the Whites’ defeat to Liverpool.
Bamford was replaced by new signing Rodrigo just after the hour mark in last week’s Premier League opener.
The Spaniard then played the full 90 minutes in Leeds’ Carabao Cup defeat to Hull City on Wednesday.
Bamford was left on the bench for the tie and Phillips believes this is a sign that he will start on Saturday in the 3pm kick-off at Elland Road.
Asked by Football Insider whether Bamford deserves to retain his place against Fulham, Phillips said: “If you score away at Anfield, it was a tidy little finish as well with his right foot, he dinked it over the keeper.
“Before I opted for Rodrigo to go straight in but Bielsa showed that he is very loyal so credit to him and credit to Bamford for getting his goal.
“If I’m Bamford now, I know Rodrigo started on Tuesday, I’d be disappointed if I didn’t start.
“With him not starting on Tuesday, I’d expect Bamford to start against Fulham at the weekend.
“He scored as well, I’ve been in that position before, when a striker scores a goal, he’s going to be full of confidence so why would you not start him again?
“I fully expect him to start the game at the weekend and credit to the player.”
Bamford’s goal against Liverpool was just his second in the Premier League in his 28th top flight appearance.
