Kevin Phillips claimed Liverpool made the right choice in signing Mohammed Salah after Riyad Mahrez revealed they were interested in signing him that same summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland striker, who worked with Mahrez whilst at Leicester City suggested the winger would think about leaving Manchester City if the right opportunity arrived.
The 29-year-old signed for Pep Guardiola’s side in July 2018, a year after Mohammed Salah joined the Reds in a £34million deal.
The Algerian told BeIN Sports journalist Smail Bouabdellah on Instagram that Jurgen Klopp was interested in acquiring his services in 2017.
However, Mahrez claims any chance of a move to Anfield was ended when the Reds signed Salah.
When asked by Football Insider if Jurgen Klopp made the right choice signing the Egypt international, Phillips said: “That is the £64million dollar question.
“You would have to say they made the right choice because of what Salah has done for Liverpool but it is not to say that Riyad Mahrez would not have done the same.
“Having had the pleasure to work and play with him he is a top-class player. I imagine he is getting frustrated at Manchester City. He is in and out of the team.
“I think he would consider leaving for regular football. He is not a kid anymore.
“Liverpool made the right decision, the stats show you that Salah has been an unbelievable signing.”
Salah has scored 91 goals and provided 37 assists in his 141 appearances for the Reds – scoring the opening goal in last season’s Champions League final victory.
Whereas Mahrez has scored 21 goals and provided 26 assists in his 81 appearances for the current Premier League champions.
