Exclusive: Premier League clubs in summer race to sign Brentford star Matthew Cox
Brentford goalkeeper Matthew Cox is being tracked by Premier League and top European clubs following his impressive form on loan at Shrewsbury Town, sources have told Football Insider.
A host of scouts from Premier League and elite European sides cast an eye over the 22-year-old during Shrewsbury‘s 2-1 win over Salford in midweek.
Cox has been outstanding for Shrewsbury since joining on loan from Brentford in January, collecting four man-of-the-match awards during their run of five straight wins.
He missed a chunk of last year after getting injured whilst on loan at Crawley Town, but he is now back to full fitness and could be set for a big move in the summer if his fine form continues.
Matthew Cox’s career so far
Brentford regard Cox highly, after the keeper signed a seven-year deal with the Premier League club upon his arrival in 2021.
Cox has also shone on the international stage, helping England‘s Under-19s win the 2022 U-19 European Championship and winning the tournament’s Golden Glove award.
He gained valuable senior experience for the first time out on loan at Bristol Rovers in the 2023-24, keeping three clean sheets in 28 League One appearances.
The 22-year-old then spent time at Crawley last season, but it is Shrewsbury where he has really come into his own over the last six weeks.
Cox has helped Salop move away from the League Two relegation zone and into 17th place, after keeping three clean sheets and conceding just six goals in his first eight appearances for the club.
Igor Thiago has no plans to leave Brentford right now
While Cox could well leave Brentford for pastures new soon, star striker Thiago looks set to stay at the club despite ongoing rumours over a summer exit.

The Brazilian striker has scored 17 goals in 27 Premier League games so far this season to help the Bees enter the race for European qualification as it stands.
Tottenham and Aston Villa have both been linked with respective moves for Thiago, but he is focused on achieving big things in West London right now.
Sources have told Football Insider that Thiago currently has no plans to leave Brentford in the summer and is not considering his future, with a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad on his radar in the coming months.
