Noel Whelan has tipped there to be a number of Premier League clubs chasing the capture of Aston Villa’s John McGinn after his impressive first season in England.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider the former Leeds United star and expert Championship pundit believes that the two sides to have already secured automatic promotion to the top flight – Norwich City and Sheffield United – will also be looking at the 24-year-old as someone who can do a job in either the second tier or among England’s elite.
McGinn has made 40 appearances for the Villans since his move south of the border back in the summer of 2018 and was voted the club’s player of the year after helping them secure a place in the play-offs.
However, while Whelan expects much interest in the former Hibernian ace, he says that it will all come down to whether the player feels he needs to leave after a year at Villa Park.
Speaking of who he believes will be hunting the Scottish international’s signing this summer, Whelan exclusively told Football Insider: “I would very much think that Premier League sides, or even sides that are getting promoted already.
“Sheffield United and Norwich will be looking at players like that who can cope with the demands of the Premier League and also, if they come back down, know they’ve got a player that knows how to get out of the Championship.
“That would be a smart move for one of those two sides to go and get a player like him if, and only if, the player wants to leave and the club feel they have to let somebody go like that.
“I’m pretty sure a club the size of Aston Villa are not a selling club so it’s entirely up to them. If the player feels he wants to give it a shot, then sometimes it’s hard to stand in their way.”
McGinn has six goals and 10 assists to his name for Aston Villa in the Championship, as well as finding himself on the wrong side of referees with 14 yellow cards.
In other Aston Villa news, the club are chasing another Chelsea forward after the success of Tammy Abraham.
