Kevin Phillips has claimed that Gareth Bale has “lost his appetite” for the game as Tottenham continue to monitor their former player’s position at Real Madrid.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, also questioned whether the 31-year-old would still be able to perform at the highest level in the Premier League.
Bale appears to have been frozen out by Real boss Zinedine Zidane but has two years remaining on his contract at the Bernabau where he earns a staggering £600,000-a-week.
Football Insider revealed that Spurs are keeping close tabs on the attacker’s situation in Madrid with an eye to a loan move late in the window.
Phillips is adamant that the Wales international will stay at the Spanish giants until the end of his deal.
“I see him sticking out his contract in Madrid,” he told Football Insider.
“It almost seems to me that Gareth Bale has lost his appetite. It doesn’t look like he really wants to push himself and play football. It might be controversial but I get the feeling he is happy sitting there and of course he is earning a hell of a lot of money.
“He is enjoying his lifestyle so I do not see him pushing himself, coming to the Premier League and having to perform week in, week out and have that pressure. I see him sitting that two-year deal out, picking up his money and at the end of it he will reassess.
“He has not playing a lot of football in a few years so would he even be able to light the Premier League up now? His game was built on pace and when you do not play for so long it can have an affect on you.”
