Michael Brown admits he is intrigued as West Brom enter advanced talks to sign Troy Deeney from Watford.
The former Leeds and Spurs midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that recently-relegated sides are always at threat of losing their players to top-flight clubs.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Baggies are in negotiations to sign the 32-year-old as they bid to beat Premier League big guns Tottenham to his capture.
Spurs are in the hunt for a new centre-forward to offer cover for Harry Kane but West Brom currently lead the way after making progress towards a deal with Watford over the last week.
Brown admits he is fascinated to see where Deeney ends up before the window closes.
Brown told Football Insider: “At the top of the pitch, they have been looking at these opportunities, looking at Huddersfield, seeing if they can pick a pocket at a Championship club and it’s still continuing.
“The teams that go down, you would always say – we’ve seen Newcastle do it – that’s just ultimately the nature of the beast so they’ll be trying to pick strikers off different teams.
“I think Troy is an interesting one, whether there’s going to be movement. He’s very vocal, he says it how it is does Troy so you’ll have to watch this space.”
As revealed by Football Insider, the Baggies are also in talks to sign Karlan Grant from Huddersfield in a £16million deal.
Deeney scored 10 goals in 27 appearances for Watford last season as the Hornets suffered the drop.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have been tipped to have pulled off a bargain as defender deal agreed.
