Leeds United winger Helder Costa may have ruined his chances of breaking back into Marcelo Bielsa’s Premier League starting XI.
That is the view of 73-goal ex-Premier League forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 27-year-old’s lackluster display in the Whites 3-0 defeat to Crawley Town on Sunday.
Costa was handed his first start by Bielsa since the Whites’ 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on November 7 but he failed to impress.
The one-time Portugal international played the full 90 minutes and lost possession a staggering 15 times as well as missing two big chances, according to sofascore.
Summer signing Raphinha replaced Costa at half-time at Selhurst Park just over two months ago and has since established himself as one of the first names on Bielsa’s teamsheet.
Asked by Football Insider whether Costa has blown his chance to break back into Leeds’ Premier League side, Agbonlahor said: “Yes, I think it was the sort of game that managers will judge how you play.
“That’s the sort of game where managers want their fringe players to shine and compete for places with the starting team.
“A lot of them will have ruined their chances of breaking into the starting team.
“He’ll be very disappointed with their performances and maybe they’ll find it even harder to get into the team now.”
Costa moved to Leeds United on loan from Wolves at the beginning of last season and the deal was made permanent in July.
He started the Yorkshire giants’ first eight Premier League games this term and scored one goal and provided two assists in that time.
