Exclusive: Rangers could land £12m+ windfall – official documents reveal

Rangers could earn more than £12million if they manage to make it through to the knockout rounds of the Europa League this season, sources have told Football Insider.

The Glasgow giants missed out on a place in the Champions League group stage after suffering defeat against Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifying rounds last month.

Football Insider revealed on 14 August the Scottish club’s elimination from the Champions League could have cost them around £40million in extra revenue.

Rangers begin their Europa League campaign on Thursday night when they make the trip to Scandinavia to face Swedish champions Malmo.

That is the first of eight tricky fixtures for Philippe Clement’s side in the new 36-team league phase of the competition, where they will also play Manchester United, Tottenham, Lyon, Olympiakos, Union Saint-Gilloise, FCSB and Nice.

Rangers could land significant windfall with knockout qualification

As per official Uefa documents released in March, each team will earn a guaranteed £3.61million for playing in the Europa League this season.

They will then be in line for extra cash payments under the governing body’s new value pillar system, which is split into European and non-European segments based on their coefficient ranking and the market pool.

Sources have told Football Insider that will see Rangers earn around £5.74million due to their high ranking in Uefa’s coefficient table.

The two extra group stage games provide clubs with a chance to generate more revenue from matches, with £377,000 awarded for each win and £126,000 for a draw.

The top eight teams will each receive £1.46million for qualifying automatically for the last 16, while the clubs who finish between ninth and 24th will earn £251,000 for featuring in the knockout round play-offs.

Sources have told Football Insider Rangers will likely earn just over £12million if they manage to make it through to the last 16 before ticket sales are included.

Although that is only just over £5million short of the £17.3million they banked for reaching the Europa League final in 2022, it’s considerably less than what Celtic will generate from the Champions League this season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Brendan Rodgers’s side are in line to land around £30million from their European exploits, while they will also benefit financially from Rangers failing to reach the group stage.
