Exclusive: Rangers transfer plan revealed after ‘£20m’ confirmed news
Rangers’ new owners are expected to make big transfer funds available to their new head coach this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh completed their majority buyout at Ibrox last week (31 May) and confirmed they will invest £20million via a share issue.
It is believed the majority of that money will be reflected in the transfer budget for their new manager this summer.
Big changes are expected at Rangers this summer with Kevin Thelwell starting work as the club’s new sporting director in recent days.
Rangers set sights on experienced stars to close Celtic gap
The Gers’ primary focus is to sign younger players for development but the club also acknowledge they need to sign more experienced stars to close the gap to Celtic in the meantime.
Rangers, who sacked former manager Philippe Clement in February, finished some 17 points adrift of the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership this season.
Competition | Performance |
Scottish Premiership | 2nd |
Champions League | Lost in Third Qualifying Round (vs Dynamo Kyiv) |
Europa League | Lost in Quarter-Final (vs Athletic Bilbao) |
Scottish League Cup | Lost in Final (vs Celtic) |
Scottish Cup | Lost in Fifth Round (vs Queen’s Park) |
The Ibrox club were also beaten by Celtic in the final of the Scottish League Cup and lost in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup against minnows Queen’s Park.
New owners 49ers Enterprises and Cavenagh have confirmed their “goal is to win trophies in Scotland and be able to compete at a high level in Europe, while laying a foundation of financial sustainability for the future”.
Rangers will discover their opponents for the second qualifying round of the Champions League later this month – with the two-legged tie kicking off on 22/23 July.

Ancelotti is ‘front-runner’ for Rangers hot seat
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed last week (28 May) that former Real Madrid assistant boss Davide Ancelotti is the “prime candidate and front-runner” for the Rangers job.
Interim boss Barry Ferguson, who replaced Clement in the dugout, has not been kept on after a caretaker spell.
Rangers are very keen to agree a swift deal to put a new man in the dugout with their Champions League qualifying campaign kicking off next month.
