Noel Whelan claims the likes of Rangers will be “overjoyed” to hear that Charlton striker Lyle Taylor will not play when the Championship season resumes.
The former Leeds and Coventry hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 30-year-old’s refusal to play will be music to his suitors’ ears ahead of the summer transfer window.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Gers are one of a number of sides chasing the Addicks’ star forward on a free transfer this summer.
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer revealed to talkSPORT that Taylor, who is out of contract this summer, is one of three players who have said they will not play when the season kicks off again.
Taylor has since stated that a fear of injury ruining his opportunity to play at the highest level possible is the reason behind his decision not to make himself available.
Whelan, who admits he can see the issue from both the player’s and the club’s perspective, believes the big winners are clubs like Rangers who are battling to sign him.
“The clubs that want him will be absolutely overjoyed to hear this news,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Lee Bowyer, on the other hand, will be absolutely gutted. I’m all for players standing by their contracts and doing everything for the club until their contract expires, I think that is the way things should be done.
“I also listened to his interview and I appreciate what he said – at his age, this could be his last contract, for him and his family, for a certain amount of money that’s going to see them and look after them for the next three to four years and beyond football.
“I can absolutely see his point. I’m sure Lee Bowyer can see the point as well having been a great player who made a living out of playing football but I see the other side that he’s desperate to keep Charlton in the Championship.”
Taylor has been one of Bowyer’s top performers this season, with 11 goals in 22 Championship appearances under his belt.
The Montserrat international also netted 11 times in the Scottish Premiership with Partick Thistle between 2014 and 2015.
