Exclusive: Rob Edwards fighting for Wolves job as Fosun mull unexpected change
Rob Edwards is fighting to convince Wolves owners Fosun that he is the man to lead the club into a Championship promotion campaign, sources have told Football Insider.
The Premier League‘s bottom club completed a stunning comeback against leaders Arsenal to earn a point at Molinuex on Wednesday, but the owners remain hesitant.
Edwards was appointed in November on a three-and-a-half-year contract, replacing the ousted Vitor Pereira.
But the 43-year-old has been unable to turn the tide at Molineux, with Wolves on course for one of the worst Premier League campaigns of all time.
Decision-makers have been aware of the pending relegation for some time, however, and have been able to begin preparations for an immediate return to the top flight.
Sources say it is not nailed-on that Edwards will be in charge of the team for the start of next season and he effectively fighting for his job in the remaining months of this campaign.
Rob Edwards fighting to keep Wolves dream alive
Edwards made 111 appearances for Wolves between 2004 and 2008 as a player, and later returned to the club in 2016.
His first managerial roles came at Molineux, first with the Under-18s, before being promoted to first team coach under then manager Kenny Jackett.
He would go on to work under Walter Zenga before taking charge as interim manager following the Italian’s sacking. Edwards joined Paul Lambert’s team when he took over in 2016, and left alongside him at the end of the season.
He returned to take over the U23s in 2018, but left once again for a role working with the England U20s in 2019.
“This opportunity and this job is something I’ve always wanted and dreamed of,” the former Wales international said after he was appointed manager in November.
Despite the terrible position Wolves found themselves in, Edwards jumped at the chance to take place in the dugout, leaving Middlesbrough second in the Championship.
Should his side not finish the season positively, however, the 43-year-old could find his dreams cut short.
Edwards has conflicting Championship history
Edwards has seen the very best of a Championship campaign, and indeed, the very worst.
The former centre-back guided Luton Town to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2023, after a third-placed finish.
| Rob Edwards | Championship |
| Wins | 32 |
| Draws | 23 |
| Losses | 23 |
| Scored | 94 |

But after the Hatters had been relegated, Edwards won just seven of 26 games and left his side 20th when he was sacked – a situation they did not get out of.
His time at Middlesbrough was far more positive, however. Boro were second in the Championship and had lost just two league games at the time of his departure.
A decision awaits Wolves, and it is one that will be key to the club’s future.
