Paul Robinson is blown away that Newcastle United have managed to secure a “lucrative” new sponsorship deal while there is still great uncertainty over the club’s ownership.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the agreement would allow the Magpies to invest in the squad this summer.

The club confirmed yesterday that they had agreed a new long-term commercial agreement with current sponsors FUN88.

The sports betting company has been Newcastle’s shirt sponsor since 2017.

The deal has been agreed in the midst of a takeover with current owner Mike Ashley still awaiting the Premier League’s verdict on a £300million takeover from a Saudi-backed consortium.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the extension of the club’s partnership with FUN88, Robinson said:

“The takeover is on, off and we do not know what is happening so for them to sign a lucrative deal with a betting company is great for them.

“It is finances that will allow the club to buy players and improve the facilities.

“Newcastle will hopefully take responsibility for educating their fans on gambling. Not just don’t gamble because football and betting companies need to peacefully coexist to keep finances in the game.”

Lee Charnley, the club’s managing director, said: “We are delighted FUN88 has renewed its relationship with Newcastle United and committed its support to the club over a number of years to come.

“Building on the success of our partnership to date, we look forward to this next phase and working together to engage fans and grow our collective reach around the globe.”
