Paul Robinson slammed Everton attacker Richarlison after he seemed to be hitting the deck following minimal contact in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Tottenham keeper was asked whether it was embarrassing for Richarlison to potentially be tagged as a diver and he claimed it was.
Richarlison was previously accused of diving by Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas earlier in 2019 and Robinson pointed out that the Toffees attacker seemed to go down easily against Spurs.
Robinson explained that being tagged was not only embarrassing but it may work against the Brazilian as referees may start to think that he dived rather than he was fouled.
When asked if it was embarrassing for Richarlison to be tagged as a diver, Robinson told Football Insider: “Yeah, you don’t want to be given that tag and Richarlison does go down too easily.
“There were times in the game yesterday where he went down with minimal contact and he was on the ground looking for free-kicks.
“And if you get a tag like that as a player, referees obviously see that tag as well, so it may get you a few decisions early on but referees once they know you have a reputation, you tend to get less and less decisions your way, and let’s say referees will be less lenient towards you as they probably think he dived first instead of thinking oh that’s a foul.”
The 22-year-old left-sided winger has scored four goals and registered two assists in the 14 appearances he has made for Marco Silva’s side this season.
Richarlison has been at Goodison Park since joining from Watford in July 2018 and is contracted to stay with the Toffees until 2024.
