Exclusive: Ryan Mason close to agreeing West Brom deal

Tottenham coach Ryan Mason is close to agreeing a deal to be the new West Brom manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship club are now in advanced talks to appoint the 33-year-old with a breakthrough in discussions near.

Football Insider first revealed on 24 May that West Brom had opened talks with Mason, who emerged as the leading candidate for the position.

Mason is now the clear frontrunner to be the new boss of Championship outfit West Brom, who missed out on promotion after finishing ninth in the recently-completed campaign.

The former midfielder is currently a member of Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff at the newly-crowned Europa League champions.

The Baggies have been without a manager since 21 April when Tony Mowbray was sacked following a 3-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened Derby County.

Mowbray’s spell lasted just three months, having arrived in January after Carlos Corberan left to join Valencia in a turbulent season at The Hawthorns.

West Brom eye Ryan Mason appointment

West Brom finished the season under the interim guidance of James Morrison, who took charge of two games, a draw with Cardiff and a final-day win against Luton.

After missing out on their ambitions of promotion to the Premier League, the Baggies are aiming to go again next season under new management.

Mason has never held a permanent managerial role, but has overseen 13 games as interim boss at Tottenham following the dismissals of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

This represents a notable change in tactics, having previously opted with the vastly-experienced Mowbray to lead their promotion charge.

Their decision to sack Mowbray was widely criticised, although the 61-year-old averaged just 1.12 points per game across his 17 league games in charge.

Baggies eye squad overhaul after Darnell Furlong latest

The new West Brom manager will have an immediate job to do, with multiple first-team players potentially set to leave the club when the transfer window opens.

Darnell Furlong is being linked with a move away, as Queens Park Rangers are eyeing a reunion with the full-back who left for The Hawthorns in 2019.

The Baggies, meanwhile, are eyeing a potential squad overhaul while they plot a resolution to their recent financial issues.
