Exclusive: Sheffield United set for double swoop as Rangers deal close amid Kalvin Phillips latest

Sheffield United could be set to sign both Kalvin Phillips and Joe Rothwell on deadline day, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship outfit are closing in on the signing of Rothwell from Rangers, while they are hoping to follow that up by getting their pursuit of Phillips over the line before Monday’s 7pm deadline.

Football Insider revealed earlier in January that Sheffield United were leading the race to sign Rothwell in the winter window, and sources now say that the deal is edging towards its conclusion.

Chris Wilder’s side have already added two new faces to their squad since the start of January, and they could now be about to get a double midfield swoop over the line on deadline day.

Sheffield United face Premier League competition for Kalvin Phillips

Football Insider revealed last week that both Wolves and Burnley were chasing Phillips in the final days of the window, as the 30-year-old appears set to leave Manchester City on loan.

The former Leeds United star has made just one competitive appearance for the Citizens all season, and has been cut adrift from the first-team squad after loan spells with Ipswich and West Ham in recent seasons.

Leeds and Burnley could have both offered Premier League football to the former England international, but it looks increasingly likely that a return to Yorkshire is on the cards.

Sheffield United are lacking options in the middle of the park at the moment, and they could be about to remedy that with the arrivals of Phillips and Rothwell in the coming hours.

The Blades have pursed the latter for several weeks now, but are finally on the verge of securing a deal for the Rangers outcast.

Blades poised to secure third deadline day signing

Football Insider revealed on Friday that Sheffield United were closing in on signing Harry McGlinchey, with the Chelsea youngster free to leave his parent club before the end of the window.

Wolves and Birmingham City had also shown an interest in the 18-year-old defender, but it was Wilder’s Blades who were poised to push ahead and secure the deal.

McGlinchey’s arrival at the South Yorkshire outfit still hasn’t been confirmed as of early afternoon on deadline day, meaning he could yet become a potential third new addition of the day for United.

Wilder’s men are trying to pull away from the relegation zone in the Championship in the second half of the season, and they look set to get the reinforcements that they need.
