Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday register interest in signing Everton’s Reece Welch

Everton defender Reece Welch is wanted by Sheffield Wednesday in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship’s bottom club, who are beset by financial trouble, have expressed an interest in the 22-year-old heading into the winter window.

Welch, who is into the final year of his contract at Everton, has been named as a substitute for two Premier League games this season by David Moyes.

He has previously had two loan spells at Forest Green and Belgian side KMSK Deinze.

Sources say Everton believe a loan to the Championship in January is the next ideal move for his development.

Sheffield Wednesday are still pushing to secure a takeover, with controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri having left in October, after putting the club into administration.

Reece Welch will provide centre-back cover for Sheffield Wednesday

Harry Amass has starred for Sheffield Wednesday during his loan spell from Manchester United this season, and the Owls are now looking to repeat that trick with Everton.

Amass has quickly become a mainstay on the left side of the defence for Sheffield Wednesday, and they will now be hoping that they can achieve a similar level of impact from the signing of Welch.

The centre-back is highly regarded at his parent club, which is highlighted by the fact that Moyes has already trusted him to play a role in the first-team squad this term.

He made his professional debut for the Toffees back in March 2022, when he came off the bench during a 2-0 FA Cup victory over non-league side Boreham Wood.

Welch has featured for Everton’s U21 side in both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup already this term, and the expectation at the Hill Dickinson Stadium is that a Championship move will be his next step.

‘Really positive’ takeover news to boost Sheffield Wednesday’s January efforts

Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley exclusively told Football Insider earlier this week that Sheffield Wednesday are in a strong position for a takeover after the “really positive” news that they will not face a points deduction from the EFL next season.

The Owls are also set to see their restriction on paying fees for players lifted in January, and both of those developments should provide a welcome boost to their hopes of strengthening in the squad during the window.

The Hillsborough outfit will be a much more attractive proposition for potential loan deals with the likes of Everton, if there is light at the end of the tunnel as far as their ownership is concerned.

Ultimately, any further developments may be unable to save them this season, but there could well be renewed hope for the future on the horizon.
