Danny Mills has encouraged out-of-favour Manchester United star Jesse Lingard to join Rangers in January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Leeds United and England defender claimed a move to Glasgow could help him rediscover his best form away from the “limelight”.
TeamTALK reported last week the Light Blues are one of a number of clubs interested in the 27-year-old who is set to ask to leave Old Trafford.
He has only made United’s Premier League matchday squad twice this term and has been limited to just two appearances in the Carabao Cup.
Lingard’s contract expires at the end of the season but Man Utd do have an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
However, Mills has claimed a move north of the border could revitalise his career away from the Premier League.
Asked if Lingard should head to Rangers, Mills told Football Insider: “Yes, he needs a kick start, doesn’t he. He needs to do something.
“Maybe somewhere like Scotland, without being disrespectful, would mean he’s out of the limelight.
“If he goes to another Premier League club it’s going to be ‘ooh, Jesse Lingard, what’s he doing?’ He’ll still be under huge scrutiny week in, week out. The spotlight would still be on him.
“If he slips off to Scotland to rediscover a bit of form and a bit of fitness then he can almost go under-the-radar a little bit.
“That may well be a good move for him.”
Lingard last completed 90 minutes in the Premier League for United on the final day of the 2018-19 season.
The 24-time England international has scored 33 goals and provided 20 assists in 209 games across all competitions for his boyhood club.
