Exclusive: St Johnstone agree deal to sign Charlton Athletic’s Zach Mitchell

St Johnstone have agreed to take Charlton defender Zach Mitchell on loan for the rest of the season, sources have told Football Insider.

The 20-year-old is set to undergo a medical after travelling up to Scotland after the clubs agreed terms for the short-term move.

Mitchell spent last season on loan at Colchester United where he made 23 appearances in League Two before returning to The Valley as part of the first-team squad.

However, he has made just four senior appearances so far this season, only two of which came from the start, and is now set to leave on loan again.

The centre-back is said to be keen to play regular football once again, while a move to the Scottish Premiership is seen as the ideal next step in his development.

Charlton still have high hopes that Mitchell can one day become part of the starting XI after he signed a new deal in October, but Nathan Jones has not been moved to find a place for him this season.

St Johnstone, meanwhile, are bottom of the SPFL after picking up just 21 points in their 25 games so far and have recruited six new players in a desperate bid to improve their fortunes.

The defence has been a key area of concern this winter, with Daniels Balodis, a centre-back, Sam Curtis, a right-back, and Andy Fisher, a goalkeeper, all broght in.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Svedberg, Elliot Watt and Victor Griffith arrived earlier in the window to sure up the defensive midfield areas.

Now, Mitchell looks set to become their fourth loan signing of the winter window as they continue their efforts to plug a leaky defence.
