Exclusive: Stockport agree to sign Oliver Norwood after Sheffield United exit

Stockport are poised to sign former Sheffield United midfielder Oli Norwood on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Norwood is a free agent after leaving Sheffield United at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old has been training with Stockport in pre-season and the ambitious League One club have now agreed a deal to sign the former Northern Ireland international.

The experienced midfielder provides versatility with his ability to play box-to-box, defensive, or as a more attacking option.

Stockport are keen to sign a proven central midfielder who can instantly slot into their starting XI.

With 588 career appearances, Norwood certainly ticks that box and can help in Stockport’s push for promotion.

Stockport will try to capitalise on Oli Norwood’s experience

Norwood had made 252 appearances for Sheffield before his time with the Blades came to an end.

He scored 11 goals and provided 21 assists during those performances and was a regular feature in the Premier League last season.

Norwood played 27 times in England’s top flight throughout the 2023-24 campaign as Sheffield United failed to avoid relegation, but he had slipped down the pecking order.

Despite spending most of his career in the top two leagues of English football, Norwood does boast some experience in League One.

The midfielder enjoyed spells at Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United in the division at the start of his career.
