Exclusive: Stoke City agree to sign Sheffield United promotion hero as deal all but done

EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke

Stoke City are poised to sign Sheffield United winger Mark Duffy on loan in late deadline-day deal, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League club are happy to let Duffy leave as he does not figure in Chris Wilder’s plans following promotion to the Premier League.

A number of Championship clubs have shown an interest in Duffy, but a Stoke source has told Football Insider the club have moved quickly to agree a deal for the winger and it is set to be announced later today.

This comes after Football Insider revealed last month that United had told promotion hero Duffy he was free to find a new club this window after refusing to offer him a new deal.

Duffy has been a key man at Sheffield United having been one of Chris Wilder’s first signings at the club three years ago.

The 33-year-old has been instrumental in Sheffield United’s successful promotions from League One right through to the Premier League and his skilful displays have made him a big fans’ favourite at Bramall Lane.

Duffy scored six and provided seven assists last season in 36 Championship games as the Blades won promotion to the Premier League.

In other Sheffield United news, it can be REVEALED that Birmingham City, Hull City and Wigan Athletic are working on last-gasp swoops to sign one of Chris Wilder’s strikers.
