Exclusive: Stoke City’s Liam McCarron in advanced talks to join Northampton

Stoke City defender Liam McCarron is in advanced talks to join Northampton after impressing on trial, sources have told Football Insider.

Stoke are willing to let former Leeds youngster McCarron, 23, move on this summer despite him having a year to run on his contract at the bet365 stadium.

The left-back has shone during his trial spell at Northampton and the League One club are ready to offer the former Scotland U21 international a contract at Sixfields.

It’s been a relatively quiet transfer window for Stoke so far signing Ben Gibson on a free transfer from Norwich, Viktor Johansson from Rotherham, and Eric-Junior Bocat from Belgian side Sint-Truidense.

McCarron joined the Stoke youth ranks from Leeds in the summer of 2022 and has gone on to make just a single appearance for the club a substitute appearance in their FA Cup tie against Brighton last season.

The 23-year-old chose to stake his claim at League One Northampton against Norwich in a friendly at Sixfields on Saturday instead of flying out to Cork for a week-long training camp with Stoke.

The left-back spent three months on loan at Port Vale in 2022-23 and only made four appearances. He has yet to get any sort of consistent first-team football.

Northampton ended last season in 14th and are set to start their new campaign on August 10th against Bristol Rovers.
