Kevin Phillips has tipped Olivier Giroud to push through a summer move to Tottenham given Harry Kane’s recent injury record.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the 33-year-old will want more regular football at this stage of his career than he has had at Chelsea.
Giroud will be available on a free this summer with his contract at Stamford Bridge expiring in June – although that may be extended with the current season postponed due to coronavirus.
Sky Sports reported in January that Tottenham were keen on signing the French international.
When asked if Jose Mourinho would make a move for the France international this summer, Phillips told Football Insider: “I think it would have just been a stop-gap until Kane came-back.
“Tottenham have got a big dilemma in terms of bringing a striker in. The way they play with one up-front, whoever comes in will have to accept they will be in the shadow of Kane. It will be difficult for them in the summer.
“Giroud will almost certainly move on from Chelsea.
“He might want to push a move to Spurs through because he wants to stay in London. Maybe he will be thinking that Harry has picked up a few injuries and if he does he will get a run of games.
“But for me, if I had sat on the bench for so long, at this stage of my career, I would want to play week in week out. When he does he is superb.”
Giroud has been limited to just 13 appearances this campaign, scoring three, with Tammy Abraham preferred for much of the season by Frank Lampard.
