Exclusive: Swansea City respond to defender offer from north-west club

Swansea City have rejected an offer from Bolton Wanderers for defender Declan John, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The former Rangers and Sunderland left-back has just six months left on his contract at the Liberty Stadium and looks set to exit the club in 2021.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Wales international is wanted by Bolton on loan ahead of the January transfer window.

John has been frozen out by Swans boss Steve Cooper following his return from an unsuccessful loan spell at the Stadium of Light.

His last appearance for the Championship club came in January – a 5-1 FA Cup defeat at QPR.

The defender has struggled to establish himself in English football since swapping Ibrox for the Liberty Stadium in August 2018.

Over the past 12 months, he has made just one senior appearance and did not feature at all for Sunderland during a six-month loan spell on Wearside.

However, Bolton boss Ian Evatt has identified the Swansea City full-back as a potential option for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

The League Two club have struggled defensively this season, a problem which was highlighted in yesterday’s 3-3 draw with Carlisle United.

Only Oldham Athletic and Grimsby Town have conceded more than Bolton in the division, a stat which has prompted Evatt to look for defensive reinforcement in January.

John’s last season of regular first team football came at Rangers in 2017/18 where he 31 appearances in all competitions.
