Exclusive: Tavernier & Barisic tipped to sway £60K-a-wk ace to join Rangers instead of Celtic

Alan Hutton has claimed James Tavernier and Borna Barisic could sway Bordeaux striker Josh Maja to sign for Rangers ahead of Celtic.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has praised the “excellent” scouting networks at both clubs and insists it is no surprise to see them both chasing the ex-Sunderland hitman.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic have reignited their 2019 interest in the 21-year-old to join Rangers in the hunt for his capture this summer.

This site has since detailed how Bordeaux have let it be known they are willing to listen to offers for the hitman less than two years after handing him a £57,000-a-week deal to sign from Sunderland.

Hutton insists that a move to either of Scotland’s biggest clubs could be a “dream” for a striker with the amount of chances they both create.

Hutton told Football Insider: “Normally when a young talented player comes up you find both Old Firm teams going head to head to try and sign him so it doesn’t really surprise me.

“Celtic and Rangers, when you look at some of the players they’ve brought in, they’ve done really well in the transfer market, their scouting teams have been excellent so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was the same.

“To come to Scotland, where you’re going to play for one of the best teams and get plenty of chances, whether it be Rangers or Celtic, and if you look at Rangers’ full-backs [Tavernier and Barisic], the amount of deliveries they put in, it’s a striker’s dream.

“I think it would be a great opportunity for somebody to come and get a chance at scoring a lot of goals so yeah, I think it would be a good option.”

Maja has netted nine goals in 31 games for Bordeaux since moving to France with all but one of his strikes coming this season.

Celtic are the top scorers in the Premiership this season with 89 goals in 30 games, Rangers trailing behind in second by 25 strikes.

In other Celtic news, Darren Bent claims the Hoops could beat Everton to sign an up and coming hitman.
