Noel Whelan has urged Celtic to go all out for Fraser Forster after a three man shortlist of alternative goalkeeping targets emerged.

The former Leeds United and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the 32-year-old be “first choice” having performed “amazingly” this season.

According to Chilean outlet The Times, Joe Hart, Ben Foster and Claudio Bravo are amongst those considered to replace the Englishman if a deal cannot be agreed with Southampton this summer.

Football Insider revealed last week that the Hoops have told the shot-stopper he will have to take a pay cut if he wants to complete a permanent move to Parkhead this summer.

Forster still has two years left on his contract at St. Mary’s having spent last season on a season-long loan deal in Glasgow.

When asked by Football Insider if Joe Hart should be considered by Neil Lennon for the number one jersey, Whelan said: “I think Fraser Forster is the first choice.

“If they can get him back I would certainly choose him over Joe Hart but who knows what the situation is with Fraser at the minute?

“Neil Lennon knows him so well and he has done amazingly since he went back there.

“But if they cannot get that deal done you have to look elsewhere. Joe has got great experience. It might suit Celtic to get in a player like that if they cannot get Forster.”

Forster kept 14 clean sheets in 28 appearances for the Bhoys on their way to the league title as well as Man of the Match performance in their League Cup triumph over Rangers.

Hart will be available on a free contract this summer after he revealed he will not be extending his stay at Burnley.

In other Celtic news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider 24-year-old needs to “sort himself out” ahead of potential Parkhead move this summer.
