Exclusive: Tim Steidten ‘in the firing line’ as West Ham board question signings
West Ham sporting director Tim Steidten is “in the firing line” of club chiefs after a dismal start to the season, sources have told Football Insider.
The 45-year-old was given a mandate to overhaul the squad after winning a behind-the-scenes war at the end of last season with ex-manager David Moyes.
But there is a growing concern among West Ham’s hierarchy about the club’s huge summer signing spree and how the money was spent.
The Irons bolstered their defence during the most recent transfer window by spending big on Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while defensive midfielder Guido Rodriguez joined on a free transfer.
Wes Foderingham made the move to London from Sheffield United to provide another goalkeeping option.
Julen Lopetegui’s attacking side of the squad was also given a shot in the arm as Crysencio Summerville joined from Leeds and Niclas Fulkrug was signed from Borussia Dortmund.
Central midfielders Carlos Soler and Mohamadou Kante were also signed as Steidten looked to strengthen the squad as much as possible.
West Ham have struggled to make an impact despite their huge summer spree
The Irons also let several players leave the club as Kurt Zouma, Maxwel Cornet and Nayef Aguerd left the club on loan.
Said Benrahma, Nathan Trott, Thilo Kehrer, Flynn Downes, and James Ward-Prowse were sold in what was a busy transfer window for the club.
Despite Steidten helping to usher in plenty of change the start of the season has been difficult for the Irons, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.
Lopetegui’s side have only won one of their opening five matches and suffered a 3-0 drubbing against Chelsea in their most recent outing.

There has been no panic from the Hammers’ board just yet as they are set to keep backing their new manager.
