Exclusive: Tottenham respond to Real Madrid’s Cristian Romero swoop
Tottenham want to tie reported Real Madrid target Cristian Romero down to a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.
The 26-year-old’s contract at Spurs currently runs until June 2027.
Widespread reports have suggested that Real Madrid are watching Romero closely as they plot a marquee move for a new centre-back.
Sources say interest from the Spanish giants is “no surprise” after his successful stint at Tottenham to date.
Spurs will try to sit down with the defender next summer in a bid to fend off interest from Real Madrid and other top European clubs.
It is believed Romero’s social media activity after the 1-0 loss against Arsenal on Sunday (15 September) is not an indication of potential unhappiness at the club.

The World Cup winner reposted Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul on X, suggesting that Spurs’ travel arrangements following the international break were to blame for the defeat – and has since deleted the repost.
Romero has started in each of Spurs’ four Premier League games in the new season.

He has played 102 times for the London club since joining from Juventus two years ago but is yet to win a trophy in England.
The 26-year-old is a 38-cap Argentina international and won the World Cup with his country at Qatar’s 2022 tournament.
