Exclusive: Tottenham set sights on signing rising-star goalkeeper from EFL club
Tottenham have set their sights on signing a young goalkeeper ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Spurs are set to look in the EFL for a new shot-stopper who they can develop into their future number one.
O’Rourke went on to explain that, if the right option and opportunity becomes available, the club are “definitely” looking to add a new goalkeeper to their squad.
This comes as a result of Guglielmo Vicario’s recent injury issues which have forced 36-year-old Fraser Forster to step in as cover.
Forster’s performances have been solid across his eight appearances in all competitions so far this season, but there is recognition at Tottenham that he is not getting any younger.
As a result, they will target the EFL for a more inexperienced option to add to their squad who will be allowed to hone his skills before eventually becoming their number one.
In the meantime, Vicario remains a long-term absentee after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured ankle, as Ange Postecoglou refused to put a time frame on his return.
Tottenham to sign new goalkeeper after Guglielmo Vicario twist
The goalkeeping position at Tottenham has been the focus of plenty of scrutiny so far this season, with Vicario also receiving his fare share of stick from fans and neutrals.
His apparent inability to command his area from set pieces had been flagged as a major issue, with fans going as far as to suggest his displays could get Postecoglou sacked.
However, the Italian’s absence through injury has exposed the lack of strength in depth between the sticks despite Forster’s ever-reliable displays.
Reports have now claimed Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, 24, and Burnley’s James Trafford, 22, have emerged as potential targets for the January transfer window.
Now, however, O’Rourke has revealed the goalkeeper investment could be more long-term to rival Vicario for his starting role.

Tottenham’s transfer team are expected to be busy in the January transfer market after the decision to back Postecoglou following their failings in the summer.
