Exclusive: Spurs to open new deal talks, pundit: Mourinho busting to get it done
Noel Whelan believes that Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier will be keen to put pen to paper on a new contract with talks scheduled in north London.
In an exclusive interview with Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker claims that the defensive enforcer will flourish as Jose Mourinho is desperate to get it finalised.
As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham are planning to open contract talks with the 26-year-old after initially giving him the green light to leave.
With Dier’s current deal running out in 2021, it is understood the board want to avoid a repeat of Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld’s contract sagas in north London.
Whelan believes that a new long-term deal will show the midfielder the faith Mourinho has in his abilities and as a result, his confidence will grow.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Look, he’s a player I think that wants to stay at Tottenham.

“I think that gives him a lot more stability there at the club, that the manager there wants him, wants to give him a new contract and wants him to be part of plans at Tottenham.
“That’s when you’re best as a player, when you’ve got the confidence from a manager, showing that he’s got trust in you.”
Injury, illness and indifferent form has seen Dier’s game time reduced over the last 18 months, having once been a mainstay for club and country.
He has a total of 25 games under his belt this term, having played 28 times across all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in advanced talks to agree new deal after initial offer rejected.
