Exclusive: Tuchel’s England to learn from Chelsea at World Cup after FA hire

England and Thomas Tuchel could take a leaf out of Chelsea’s book ahead of the 2026 World Cup, according to Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the Three Lions can learn from the Blues’ Club World Cup campaign before heading out to America next year.

Tuchel’s side are well on their way to securing their spot at the major tournament, winning nine points from a possible nine against Albania, Latvia, and Andorra earlier this year.

They came incredibly close to lifting the Euro title in Berlin, Germany, last summer, narrowly losing 2-1 to Spain in the final, with the men’s national team still waiting for a trophy since 1966.

England to learn from Chelsea at Club World Cup

The likes of Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, and Reece James could all be involved at the 2026 World Cup, representing Stamford Bridge, and they could be bringing a lot of experience with them.

Ahead of the Club World Cup, the Blues smartly hired staff from the FA to help organise camps behind the scenes, working closely with friends and families of the players, planning entertainment and accommodation [BBC Sport].

With Maresca’s side eventually going on to lift the title at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, 13 July, thanks to goals from Palmer and Joao Pedro, the plan clearly affected the squad positively.

England to bring in new hire ahead of 2026 World Cup

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “When you’re involved in a tournament, there’s an early morning training session before having the rest of the day, and players become bored.

“With colleagues, we’ll have walks around the city and go sightseeing, but time is the killer for players. This might be something that England learn from when they go to the World Cup, taking family out and doing the same things.

“Up to this tournament, Chelsea have been in the background. Other than signing players and spending huge amounts of money. We’ve not seen delivery on the field of play.

“Tournaments give plenty of time for the coaching team to work with players, likely with a sports psychologist involved as well. Being comfortable is so important.

“Chelsea have come to the forefront now, so I’m expecting them to jump ahead next season and be a real challenger. The Premier League will be delighted to see one of its teams win the competition.”
