Exclusive: Van Nistelrooy sack update emerges from Leicester City

Leicester City will hold discussions over the immediate future of Ruud van Nistelrooy as manager once their relegation is confirmed, sources have told Football Insider.

The Foxes look doomed to go down after falling 15 points adrift of 17th-place Wolves with seven games left to play this season.

Sources have told Football Insider that there is a “strong possibility” Van Nistelrooy, 48, could leave once Leicester are officially relegated.

Southampton made a similar move after their demotion was confirmed – cutting Ivan Juric loose and appointing Simon Rusk on an interim basis.

Leicester could confirm their place in the Championship for the 2025-26 campaign as early as the end of April.

‘Strong possibility’ Leicester will part ways with Van Nistelrooy

The Foxes are in terrible form, losing eight straight Premier League games without scoring – and fans have evidently lost patience with Van Nistelrooy for his management of the side.

He replaced Steve Cooper with the club sitting 16th in the table in December and won his first game in charge against West Ham.

But he has won just one top-flight game since then and has picked up just seven points from a possible 54 while in the hot seat.

The Dutchman, who impressed in a spell as interim Man United boss earlier this season, is under contract at the King Power Stadium until June 2027.

It has been claimed that Dyche is a potential manager target for Leicester.

‘Dyche and Martin on Leicester shortlist’

Meanwhile, industry expert Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Leicester are considering ex-Everton boss Sean Dyche and former Southampton manager Russell Martin as potential successors for Van Nistelrooy.

Martin was relieved of his duties at St Mary’s Stadium last December while David Moyes replaced Dyche at Goodison Park in January.

Leicester are set to return to the Championship after winning the division under Enzo Maresca in the 2022-23 campaign.
