Exclusive: Whelan alarmed by what he saw Ben White doing at Leeds
Noel Whelan admits he was alarmed by the confusion shown by Leeds United defender Ben White in the win over Barnsley.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker claims Thursday’s “disjointed” performance was the worst he has seen from the Whites all season.
Despite having just three shots to Barnsley’s 12 at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa’s men snatched victory thanks to a Michael Sollbauer own goal.
Whelan insists the display was a far cry from the Leeds United performances he has watched all season and singled out a moment from star defender White as a concern.
Whelan told Football Insider: “To be quite honest Barnsley did to us what we normally do to teams at Elland Road. We didn’t seem to have a cohesion about is, we were disjointed, sloppy, lethargic at times as well.
“We were kind of void of ideas on the ball – it was basically hoof it up the pitch and it was just coming back at us. I’m not sure having Ben White in that position (worked), I think no one really knew where they were playing for five minutes of the game.

“You could see Ben White looking, arms up in the air, at Marcelo Bielsa and then Berardi went in to that position, he went to right-back, Berardi then went across to left-back – so it was very unlike Leeds United.
“Usually we’re more organised than that, it just didn’t seem to happen. It was very unlike a Leeds performance, probably the worst display I’ve seen all season.”
Leeds are just one point away from sealing promotion back to the Premier League and could go up without kicking a ball if West Brom or Brentford fail to win their games.
The Whites’ next match, which is the penultimate game of the season, sees them take on Derby County away from home.
In other Leeds United news, Whelan has made a big claim about West Brom’s clash against Huddersfield on Friday.
