Exclusive Whelan blasts Everton ace who started v Palace, claims axe imminent
Noel Whelan believes Everton could target a new goalkeeper after a number of mistakes from number one Jordan Pickford.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League striker insists the 26-year-old has made “too many” errors during the opening weeks of the new season.
The England international kept his place in the Toffees’ starting XI against Crystal Palace on Saturday despite having contributed to both of Fleetwood’s goals in Everton’s 5-2 League Cup win in midweek.
He was beaten by a towering header from the Eagles’ Cheikhou Kouyate but Carlo Ancelotti’s men managed to secure a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park.
Pickford has faced little competition for his place in the Everton side and played in every single game in both the league and cups last season.
However, Whelan believes Ancelotti may consider bringing in a new top-quality shot-stopper if he loses faith in the Sunderland-born keeper.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think it’s lack of concentration. I don’t think it’s arrogance because I don’t think he’s in a position where he can be too arrogant.
“He’s letting too many mistakes happen. Maybe concentration, maybe a bit of confidence and unfortunately when it creeps into certain aspects of your game, especially goalkeepers and centre-forwards, that’s what they thrive on.
“It stands out more, it’s like a striker missing a chance. When a goalkeeper makes a mistake, it costs you so it’s unfortunate that he’s going through but how long can Ancelotti deal with these mistakes?
“If it keeps creeping into his game then it’s going to hamper their finish in the league. There’s no doubt he’s a good goalkeeper but so is Kepa and Chelsea haven’t wasted any time in rectifying the mistakes he’s made by bringing someone else in.
“No one’s job is safe, no one’s cemented into that team line up, if you keep making mistakes there will be a change to the line-up, changes will be made and maybe that’s something Ancelotti needs to look at. They might need some stronger competition there for Pickford.”
