Exclusive: Whelan claims Leeds 26-yr-old causing his own issues after disappointing development

Noel Whelan says that Kemar Roofe is his own biggest problem after picking up another injury setback at Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Elland Road ace claims that the “explosive” nature of the 26-year-old means that he is going to pick up more ligament and muscle injuries than other players.

Roofe has been ruled out of the opening weeks of the Championships due to a sprained ankle suffered in pre-season, the Whites expecting him to be on the sidelines for a month.

Whelan says that the striker will be bitterly disappointed to be sitting out while his teammates kick off another season and that his approach to football is the primary factor.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I guess when people train at a high intensity, these things are bound to happen at times. This does seem to be a regular occurrence for Kemar at the moment but I guess that’s how he plays his game.

“Lots of twisting and turning, very explosive kind of player in that position. You can’t change the way you train, you train the way you play, that’s what we’re always taught.

“You don’t just drift through training at three-quarters per cent and half intensity. To get that sharpness you’ve got to be at it in training, that’s just the way he plays. Unfortunately, he’s picked up the injury that keeps him out for four weeks.

“It will really disappoint Kemar because we know how important it is to get through pre-season without injury and get fitness up to the maximum.”

Roofe was the club’s top scorer in the Championship for a second successive campaign last season, netting 15 goals on the way to the play-off semi-finals.

In other Leeds United news, Whelan claims that Bielsa has had to have clear-the-air talks with another senior star at Elland Road.
