Exclusive: Whelan claims more 'signings in the pipeline' at Aston Villa as 'big' deal done
Noel Whelan says Aston Villa will have more signings “in the pipeline” as he raves over the club’s capture of Tyrone Mings.
The former Leeds United star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that he has been impressed with the Villans’ business in the transfer window and that manager Dean Smith has built up a strong squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Mings is one of seven signings at Villa Park already, with the former Bournemouth man joined by Ezri Konsa, Wesley Moraes, Matt Targett, Kortney Hause, Anwar El Ghazi and Jota in putting pen to paper in the midlands.
Whelan revealed that he feels Mings’ capture is the most important so far but that more new arrivals are likely before the window slams shut.
“They’re spending now, aren’t they?” Whelan told Football Insider.

“They’ve got Tyrone Mings which I thought was the big one, that’s a really good signing, both parties happy with the return to Villa Park. One player that stood out like a sore thumb last season.
“He’s going to be a really good acquisition for Aston Villa, they’re going to have a good, strong squad so it’s going to be interesting to see how they start the season against Tottenham. I’m sure there’s still other signings in the pipeline as well.”
Mings turned out 18 times for Villa last season, standing out as one of the club’s top performers on the way to Champions play-off success.
He has featured more for the Villains than he has played in the Premier League, with just 17 top flight matched under his belt.
