Noel Whelan has had a brutal dig at Pontus Jansson ahead of Leeds United’s showdown against Brentford by claiming rookie loanee Ben White is already a better player.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker and lifelong fan of the club claimed Marcelo Bielsa’s team do not miss Jansson and he has “completely forgotten” about him.
The Sweden international made a shock move to the Bees for £5.5million during the summer window and is set to make a quick return to Elland Road for tomorrow’s Championship clash.
Bielsa claimed Jansson was sold for financial reasons and even identified the centre-back as Leeds’ outstanding player last season.
But Whelan believes the defender’s impact was overrated and claims 21-year-old White, who is on a season-long loan from Brighton, is already a superior player with just three Championship games under his belt.
“I’ve completely forgotten about Pontus Jansson,” the pundit told Football Insider. “Ben White is a better player than Jansson. Honestly.
“He is better on the floor than Jansson, more disciplined than Jansson and more intelligent in his positioning. What he doesn’t have is Jansson’s aerial dominance.
“But Ben White knows his job and doesn’t get caught out like Jansson. He stays close to Liam Cooper and those two are forming a really impressive partnership.”
Whelan was a big critic of Jansson at the end of last season after his sit-down following Leeds’ play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County at Elland Road.
