Exclusive: Whelan in awe of 'Exceptional' Leeds man after Kinnear tell-all to Sky

Noel Whelan believes Leeds United sporting director Victor Orta has had an “incredible” transfer window and is now fully part of the furniture at Elland Road.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds striker and boyhood Whites fan delivered his verdict amid interest from Roma in the Spaniard.

Chief executive Angus Kinnear told Sky Sports News (reported by LeedsLive) on deadline day: “There is interest from other clubs in Victor – it doesn’t surprise us – but we’re not letting him go anywhere.”

Leeds added four senior players to the squad this window including the deadline day capture of Brazilian winger Raphinha from French club Rennes.

Asked by Football Insider about Kinnear’s comments, Whelan said: “Victor Orta is part of the furniture now.

“With the signings that we’ve brought into the club this window he takes a massive responsibility for that.

“He’s done exceptionally well considering the covid regulations. He’s been flying out there getting deals done, speaking to players, speaking to agents.

“Between himself and Angus Kinnear they’ve done an incredible job in getting these players here with the enticement of Marcelo Bielsa and being at a very big football club with a great history.

“These aren’t players they’ve gone for willy nillly and got by the way. These are players they have been watching for a while.

“There’s a strategy how they want to bring these players in and what areas of the field we need strengthening. That is a lot of work between Angus, Marcelo and Victor.

“Right now, you’ve got to applaud the business and work done by Victor for getting these players and getting these deals done and over the line.

“He’s there until stupid o’clock at night. I’ve seen him outside the window at Elland Road when I’ve been doing interviews standing there. It’s not like he’s at home putting his feet up, he works incredibly hard.

“I don’t think anybody wants to lose that passion that he brings to the club.”
