Noel Whelan admits that he expected so much more from Leeds United defender Barry Douglas as the club prepare to sell him in the summer.
The former Leeds striker and boyhood fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the Scottish full-back has a long way to go if he is to forge any sort of future at Elland Road.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, Leeds are set to listen to any offers for the 30-year-old during the summer transfer window, when he will have just 12 months left on his contract at Elland Road.
Whelan admits he cannot fathom why the former Wolves man has not managed to live up to expectations since swapping Molineux for Elland Road, suggesting he is now third-choice at the club.
Whelan told Football Insider: “It’s not been the career we expected from Barry Douglas at Leeds. We expected bigger things from him, more appearances but it’s just not worked out, I can’t put my finger on why.
“He hasn’t been the same player as he was at Wolves. I expected him to be fighting for more positions, more game time. The way Stuart Dallas has played, I think he’s more preferred to the left side and so is Alioski.
“He seems to be third in the pecking order at the moment and he’s got a lot of work to do to convince the club he deserve a new contract. When he came we were like: ‘What a great signing,’ but we’ve hardly seen anything of the Barry Douglas we saw at Wolves.”
Douglas has featured just 13 times for the Whites this season, 11 of those games coming in the Premier League.
He was outstanding in Wolves’ title-winning campaign back in 2018, chipping in with 14 assists and five goals.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to make £45million-plus announcement in the next few weeks.
