Noel Whelan insisted Kiko Casilla is the type of player Leeds United as Victor Orta works to keep him on board during his racism ban.
The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, praised the “professional manner” in which the 33-year-old has handled the suspension.
Football Insider has revealed Victor Orta is in frequent contact with the Spanish goalkeeper to convince him that he still has a major role to play when the season recommences.
However, the former Real Madrid player’s future is in doubt with a host of keepers being linked with the club in recent weeks.
Leeds are also set to trigger the £5million option to buy in Illan Meslier’s loan deal. The 20-year-old impressed while standing in for the suspended Casilla.
Whelan suggested the Spaniard’s temperament make him an asset to the club even when unavailable for selection.
“I think that he seems a very professional player,” he told Football Insider. “He has been at a big club that demands professionalism.
“That does not surprise me because he seems quite a level headed player when you see him on the field. Very laid back so I do not think it will ruffle him too much.
“Only he will know what happened. The fact that he is letting it go and getting on with things in a professional manner shows that he is a good professional with a strong character. It is the sort of player that we need.”
Casilla still has six matches of his eight-game ban to serve after he was found guilty of racially abusing Charlton loanee Jonathan Leko last year.
The keeper strongly denied the allegations but the FA’s decision was made “beyond the reason of doubt”.
The club nor the player have apologised to Leko following the verdict.
